Saskatchewan NAC Auction House Biography and Notes
Roland Gissing was an English-born artist, best known for his prolific paintings of Western Canadian landscapes. Born in Worcester, England on May 14, 1895, Gissing studied at George Watson's College in Edinburgh, Scotland. He arrived in Calgary in 1913 at age 18. Leonard Richmond, a prominent British artist painting locally for the CPR acted as Gissing's art instructor. In 1929, Roland Gissing first showcased his paintings at an exhibition at the Calgary Public Library. In the early 1930s, Gissing began working in oils, often depicting scenes of the natural landscapes of Alberta. While trained in traditional styles his work visually transformed, over time, achieving his trademark style.
